Owner is the AI growth system for local restaurants.
Our AI continuously improves SEO, marketing, and online ordering to grow first-party orders. Unlike other companies that force small business owners to master their software to drive sales, Owner gives them a proven system run by experts.
Owner is like having an army of engineers and marketers on your side, just like the big chains.
🌎 Our vision
We’re starting by helping independent restaurants succeed online.
But it’s not just restaurants that need our help. Most local businesses are struggling with these same problems. Huge technology corporations are taking their customers, bleeding their profits, and making it hard for them to survive.
Once we nail the solution for restaurants – we’ll scale it into every other local business type.
In the future we envision, tens of millions of local business owners will use our technology to succeed in the digital age.
🚀 Our traction
Since 2020, we've generated tens of millions in revenue and processed over half a billion dollars of online orders. 1 in 5 Americans have used an Owner.com website.
More importantly, we’ve helped over 20,000 restaurant owners, and saved them nearly $200 million in fees.
⭐ Our team
Our team is now in the low hundreds. We’ve got top talent from the most successful companies in SMB software, including: Shopify, HubSpot, DoorDash, ServiceTitan, Rappi, Faire and Stripe.
We’ll be scaling even faster in 2026 to keep pace with our customer growth.
🌆 Where we work
Owner is a remote-first, global company headquartered in San Francisco, with a sales hub in Toronto. For a few of our roles we prioritize in-person collaboration at one of our office locations. Most of our teammates are distributed throughout the globe. Please review the role description and discuss with your recruiter for more details on location!
🔍 Why we’re looking for you
We’re looking for a Device Lab Engineer to build and run Owner’s device testing lab for our new POS product line. This lab will be the source of truth for validating hardware and software combinations across tablets, routers, card readers, printers, and other peripherals, and ensuring every release works across the real-world matrix our restaurants depend on.
You’ll be our first dedicated lab hire: an individual contributor who can bring structure, speed, and confidence to a fast-moving hardware + software environment. This role sits at the intersection of product engineering, QA, and operations — and will help define the standard for what “ready to ship” means for Owner POS.
This is a hybrid role located in San Francisco, California.
💥 The impact you will have
- Own the device lab end-to-end: procure, provision, organize, and maintain a fleet of POS tablets, networking equipment, payment devices, printers, and related peripherals.
- Define and execute device validation plans across changing variables including: hardware models and revisions device configuration and provisioning states OS versions and patch levels Owner POS application versions peripheral firmware and connection types (USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet)
- Build and maintain a testing matrix that captures supported and in-progress combinations; continuously expand coverage as we add new devices and markets.
- Create and evolve SOPs for hardware/software testing, device setup, troubleshooting, and re-qualification when any variable changes.
- Run regression and acceptance testing for POS releases, peripheral integrations, and OS/firmware updates; clearly document results and risks.
- Investigate and root-cause device issues by reproducing bugs in the lab, isolating variables, and partnering with engineering to land fixes.
- Partner cross-functionally with POS Engineering, Mobile/Backend, Payments, Support, and Product to drive lab priorities and release readiness.
- Improve lab efficiency over time, including lightweight automation for repeatable test flows, inventory tracking, and device health monitoring.
- Help define lab strategy as we scale: what to standardize, what to automate, and what future hires or tooling will be needed.
✅ What we’re looking for
- 3+ years in device, hardware, systems, or integration testing - ideally in POS, payments, mobile, IoT, or consumer electronics.
- Hands-on experience testing integrated hardware + OS + application + peripherals in real device environments (not just simulators).
- Experience using or administering Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions to provision, configure, secure, and maintain fleets of tablets/devices (e.g., Esper, Microsoft Intune, VMware Workspace ONE (AirWatch), Jamf, Kandji, SOTI MobiControl, Scalefusion, or Hexnode, or similar).
- Comfortable with device provisioning, OS flashing/updating, firmware management, and peripheral bring-up.
- Experience building test automation for hardware/device workflows (even small scripts or harnesses).
- Track record of defining, documenting, and maintaining SOPs for test labs or hardware/software validation processes.
- Strong instinct for building clear test matrices, prioritizing risk-based coverage, and spotting gaps before they ship.
- Strong debugging skills: logs, repro steps, variable isolation, and communicating findings clearly to engineers.
- Organized, detail-oriented lab operator who can manage inventory, keep environments consistent, and maintain high signal test results.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguity and build new functions from zero to one.
🏆 Pay and benefits
- The estimated base salary range for this role is $190,000 - $230,000 plus a generous pre-IPO equity package
- Other benefits include comprehensive health coverage, remote-first workplace, unlimited PTO - plus extra fun perks!
